No, Facebook doesn't share your number without your permission

If you are on Facebook, then chances are that this message might have appeared on your wall yesterday:
Friends! “All the phone numbers in your phone are now published on Facebook! Go to the top right of the screen, click on Account, then click on Edit Friends, go left on the screen and click on Contacts. Then go to the right hand side and click on “visit page” to remove this display option. Please repost this on your Status, so your friends can remove their numbers and thus prevent abuse if they do not want them published.”
The message started a wave of panic among several users, who were upset over their contact numbers being viewed by several others on their ‘friend list’ without their knowledge.

The move, as invasive as it seems, is mostly harmless and can be explained. If you have installed the Facebook mobile app onto your smartphone, you can choose to sync your phone contacts with Facebook. This way Facebook gets access to your phone’s contacts- with your express permission.
Also, the website provides users the option to share their phone numbers with all, some or none of their friends on Facebook. The appearance of your number on the profile of a friend depends on the privacy setting you have chosen.

In short, Facebook does the following:
1. Allows you to share your contact number with your friends if you have made it public on Facebook
2. Allow you to view, on your Facebook profile page, contacts stored on your smartphone (if you have added the FB mobile app and allowed the site to merge your phone contacts with your FB contacts)
3. Allows you to see your friends’ contact number if they have allowed that to happen
